MAHASHIVRATRI: The Great Night Of Shiva
Shivratri is a great Hindu festival celebrated annually in honored of Lord Shiva. This day is celebrated by offering water, milk,dhatura, bhang,akwan and flowers to Lord Shiva. In addition to this, devotees observe a fast, mantras are chanted, all night vigils and special prayer ceremonies are held, and Shiva scriptures are read.
Why Mahashivratri Celebrated?
There are many mythological about this day. According to a popular incident, on this day Lord Shiva drinks poison to protect the universe. The story goes like this, During this churning of the ocean, many things come out of it as a result. Deadly poison also comes out of the ocean and threatens to destroy the world. Lord Shiva drinks the poison in order to protect the universe from it. Ultimately it does not harm to Lord Shiva and the poison get stuck in his neck. Thus he comes to know as Neelkantha as due to poison, his neck becomes blue in color. Since then it is celebrated as Maha Shivratri.
Another myth also about wedding anniversary of Shiva and Parvati, according to a belief, this is a night when Shiva and Parvati got married. Thus this day also celebrated as the wedding anniversary of Shiva and Parvati.
